Deer Tick are leaning all the way into the stories that built them. With the release of “ACI,” the Providence band offers another preview of Coin-O-Matic, a record that pulls directly from the strange, layered history of their home state.
The track takes its name from Rhode Island’s Adult Correctional Institutions, a setting that immediately grounds the song in something real, local, and a little uneasy. From there, it unfolds like a piece of narrative songwriting rather than a loose sketch. The story centers on a botched robbery, but what gives it weight is the way it is told, with just enough detail to feel researched, not imagined.
Sonically, “ACI” sits in that familiar Deer Tick pocket. It has the grit of classic rock, but it never feels overly polished. There is a looseness to it, the kind that suggests it came together quickly and then stuck. That origin tracks. The chorus reportedly came out of a soundcheck jam before being built into something more deliberate, which explains why it lands with that immediate, lived-in energy.
The video mirrors that instability in a more literal way. Instead of a tightly controlled concept, it was assembled through a collaborative process where different contributors reworked individual frames. The result is inconsistent on purpose, closer to memory than narrative, which lines up with the song’s themes of consequence and unraveling.

Coin-O-Matic, due June 5, expands that approach across a full album. The record draws from Rhode Island’s overlapping histories of working-class life and organized crime, using that tension as a backdrop for songs about regret, loyalty, and survival. It is a setting that feels specific, but the emotions are not.
The band will take those songs on the road almost immediately. A North American tour kicks off June 5, with early stops in Brooklyn and a longer run stretching into the fall, including a Los Angeles date in October. They are also set to return to the Newport Folk Festival this summer, which feels like a natural fit given how closely this material is tied to place.
At this point, Deer Tick are not trying to reinvent themselves. They are digging deeper into what they already do well, tightening the storytelling, keeping the edges rough, and letting the songs carry their own weight.
