Few rappers have embodied Detroit‘s relentless work ethic quite like Skilla Baby. Whether he’s delivering street narratives, motivational records, or radio-ready collaborations, the Geffen Records artist has built his career around authenticity, ambition, and consistency. His latest release, “GYSM,” pushes those themes even further, transforming them into a full-fledged anthem for anyone chasing success.
Short for “Get You Some Money,” the new single finds Skilla Baby in familiar territory, balancing confidence, hard-earned wisdom, and aspirational storytelling over a polished production that bridges generations of hip-hop. The track cleverly reimagines Jesse Powell’s 1996 R&B classic “You,” applying a chipmunk soul treatment reminiscent of early Kanye West production before blending it with booming 808s, crisp percussion, atmospheric synths, and contemporary trap textures.
The result is one of Skilla Baby’s most accessible singles to date. While money-focused rap records are hardly new, “GYSM” succeeds because it frames financial success as motivation rather than excess. Throughout the track, Skilla delivers advice, reflections, and declarations of self-belief, encouraging listeners to pursue opportunities and build something for themselves.
That message continues in the accompanying music video. Directed by KZA, the visual presents Skilla Baby not as a celebrity detached from reality, but as an everyman moving through different professions. Viewers see him portrayed as a construction worker, office employee, delivery driver, and janitor, highlighting the everyday labor that powers the American economy. Rather than glamorizing shortcuts, the video celebrates persistence, discipline, and the value of hard work.
The release follows a productive stretch for the Detroit star. Earlier this year, Skilla teamed with fellow Motor City heavyweight 42 Dugg on “West to East,” a hard-hitting collaboration that reinforced the strength of Detroit’s rap scene. The two artists previously connected through multiple records and will continue sharing stages this summer as part of select dates on the 4 The Trenches Tour alongside Babyface Ray.
Skilla Baby’s rise has been anything but accidental. After earning widespread recognition through projects like We Eat The Most, The Coldest, and Crack Music 3, he has steadily evolved into one of Detroit’s most visible rap exports. Songs such as “Icky Vicky Vibes,” “Gorgeous,” “Bae,” and collaborations with artists including City Girls, Tee Grizzley, Toosii, Rob49, and GloRilla have helped expand his audience far beyond Michigan.

His momentum has also been validated by the industry. In 2024, he secured the fan-voted “People’s Champ” position on the XXL Freshman Class, one of hip-hop’s most coveted honors for emerging artists. Since then, he has continued building a reputation as a versatile rapper capable of moving between introspective storytelling, club records, and street anthems without losing his identity.
At a time when much of rap culture revolves around spectacle, “GYSM” succeeds because of its simplicity. The concept is direct. The message is clear. Work hard, stay focused, and get your money.
For Skilla Baby, that philosophy has become more than a slogan. It has become the foundation of one of Detroit rap’s most impressive success stories.
