flipturn have released “Sunlight (Jack Van Cleaf Version),” a reworked take on one of the more personal moments from Burnout Days, now reintroduced as part of Burnout Days (Reimagined) via Dualtone Records.
Created in collaboration with Jack Van Cleaf, the new version of “Sunlight” shifts the track’s center of gravity. Where the original leaned into expansive indie rock, this interpretation pulls inward, reframing the song through a more stripped, alt-country lens. The change is subtle but effective, bringing the writing into sharper focus rather than reworking it for scale.
The release arrives alongside a behind-the-scenes video that documents the recording process. Instead of a polished performance clip, the footage emphasizes the dynamic between the band and Van Cleaf, reinforcing the idea that Burnout Days (Reimagined) is less about remixing and more about reinterpretation.
That distinction carries across the full project. Rather than revisiting Burnout Days as a static record, flipturn open it up to a wider circle of collaborators, including Mercury, Old Mervs, Eleni Drake, Odie Leigh, Winyah, Rohna, lighthearted, Teal Peel, The Brazen Youth, Susto, and Druzin. Each artist approaches the material from a different angle, creating a version of the album that feels reassembled rather than repackaged.

For Van Cleaf, the collaboration reflects a mutual alignment rather than a one-off feature. “It’s a great joy to work with a band that functions as cohesively, efficiently, and humbly as flipturn does,” he says, pointing to both their live presence and studio process. His contribution lands as an extension of the band’s voice, not a departure from it.
The release also sets the tone for what is shaping up to be a significant year for flipturn. The band will headline Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the first time on May 21 and appear at major festivals including Bonnaroo, BottleRock Napa Valley, and Governors Ball.
“Sunlight (Jack Van Cleaf Version)” works because it does not overreach. It narrows the frame, lets the songwriting carry more weight, and shows how much range exists inside the same material when the perspective shifts.
