Death Cab for Cutie have announced their new album I Built You A Tower, set for release June 5 via ANTI- Records, marking a major shift for the band as they return to an independent label after more than two decades in the major label system. Alongside the announcement, the band has shared the album’s first single, “Riptides,” offering an early look at the record’s emotional and sonic direction.
Produced and engineered by John Congleton, I Built You A Tower was recorded over the course of just three weeks at Animal Rites in Los Angeles, along with sessions in Seattle, Bellingham, Portland, and Los Angeles. The compressed timeline lends the album a sense of immediacy, with the band leaning into a more direct, stripped-down approach compared to their recent work.
“Riptides” sets that tone early. The track moves with urgency, balancing propulsive instrumentation with a lyrical focus on internal conflict. Frontman Ben Gibbard describes the song as an attempt to navigate personal struggle against a backdrop of wider global instability, where individual grief and collective anxiety begin to blur together.
The album arrives in the wake of Death Cab for Cutie’s extensive anniversary tours celebrating Transatlanticism and Plans, which saw the band performing on a larger scale than ever before. Behind the scenes, those tours also shaped the writing process for I Built You A Tower, as Gibbard navigated both professional pressure and significant personal upheaval. The album’s title reflects that tension, framing emotional distance as both protection and limitation.

Rather than positioning itself as a return to form, the record feels more like a recalibration. The band draws from earlier instincts while applying the perspective gained over three decades together. The result is an album that prioritizes connection within the room, favoring performance over polish and immediacy over excess.
Death Cab for Cutie will support the release with a North American summer tour, followed by newly announced UK and European dates in the fall. With I Built You A Tower, the band shifts forward without abandoning the foundation that brought them here.
