The Avalanches continue one of 2026’s most compelling creative streaks with the release of “Blue Shadows,” a mesmerizing new collaboration featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O. Arriving as the Australian collective’s third new release of the year, the track reunites the artists following their acclaimed collaboration on “Dial D For Devotion” from 2020’s We Will Always Love You.
Accompanied by an atmospheric visualizer, “Blue Shadows” leans into the cinematic, sample-rich world that has made The Avalanches one of modern music’s most inventive acts, while Karen O delivers one of her most restrained and emotionally devastating vocal performances in recent memory.
Originally conceived years ago, “Blue Shadows” almost never saw the light of day. According to founding member Robbie Chater, the song began as an idea from bandmate Andy Szekeres before disappearing into an old archive. It wasn’t until Tony Di Blasi rediscovered the unfinished piece that the project gained new life.
“I included it in a selection of song ideas for Karen,” Chater explained. “I never imagined a vocal would be possible. What she recorded still amazes me after months of listening. It’s so achingly forlorn and somehow sounds as if it always existed as a song.”
Karen O immediately connected with the track’s mysterious atmosphere.
“When Robbie sent me ‘Blue Shadows’ I jumped at the chance to collaborate,” she said. “The Avalanches’ last record We Will Always Love You was a gift to humanity. I’ll count it among my Top 10 forever. The Avalanches frequency is high. I’m so happy to be asked to slide into it.”
The collaboration feels like a natural continuation of the chemistry first heard on “Dial D For Devotion,” but “Blue Shadows” occupies an even more intimate emotional space. The production drifts between ghostly orchestration, textured sampling, and dreamy electronic flourishes while Karen O’s unmistakable voice anchors the song with quiet vulnerability.
For longtime fans of The Avalanches, the release represents another evolution in a catalog built on transforming forgotten sounds into entirely new emotional experiences. Since redefining sample-based music with their landmark debut Since I Left You, the trio has consistently blurred the boundaries between electronic music, indie rock, psychedelia, and pop. Rather than simply layering samples, they construct expansive sonic worlds where nostalgia and innovation coexist.
“Blue Shadows” also extends an especially productive year for the group. Earlier in 2026, they released the euphoric Jamie xx collaboration “Every Single Weekend,” followed by “Together,” featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss. Each single has highlighted a different facet of the band’s evolving sound, with “Blue Shadows” serving as the most emotionally intimate installment yet.

Karen O, meanwhile, continues to demonstrate why she remains one of alternative music’s most captivating vocalists. Whether fronting Yeah Yeah Yeahs, collaborating with Danger Mouse, composing for film, or stepping into experimental projects, she consistently adapts her voice to each creative landscape without sacrificing its unmistakable emotional weight.
The release arrives as The Avalanches prepare for a busy run of international performances. Following appearances at Primavera Sound Barcelona, the group is set to headline London dates during Pitchfork Music Festival before bringing DJ sets to festivals across Ireland, France, Italy, and Belgium later this year.
If the band’s recent singles are any indication, 2026 may ultimately become another defining chapter in an already remarkable career. While “Every Single Weekend” celebrated pure euphoria and “Together” embraced club experimentation, “Blue Shadows” offers something quieter but equally affecting. It’s a reminder that The Avalanches remain masters of emotional storytelling through sound, and with Karen O beside them once again, they’ve crafted one of the year’s most haunting collaborations.
