Swedish House Mafia have returned with one of their most emotionally resonant releases to date, teaming up with fellow Swedish icon Lykke Li for the new single “Happiness Is So Sad.” Produced by Swedish House Mafia alongside PARISI and Fred again.., the track arrives as the trio continue an eventful 2026 that includes a headline Ibiza residency, major festival appearances, and the biggest hometown concerts of their career.
“Happiness Is So Sad” marks the first official collaboration between Swedish House Mafia and Lykke Li, bringing together two of Sweden’s most influential contemporary artists. Rather than delivering a peak-time festival anthem, the single leans into melancholy, exploring the uneasy space where joy and heartbreak coexist. The song reflects on how memories can preserve both happiness and sorrow simultaneously, capturing moments that once felt perfect but now exist only in retrospect.
Recorded in Stockholm, the release boasts an impressive creative team behind the scenes. Alongside production from Swedish House Mafia, PARISI, and Fred again.., the songwriting credits include pop architect Max Martin and acclaimed producer Oscar Holter. The song received its global premiere with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 before becoming available across all streaming platforms.
The release also marks Lykke Li’s first new music since the arrival of her sixth studio album, The Afterparty, earlier this year. The album represented another evolution for the acclaimed singer-songwriter, pairing lush orchestration with deeply introspective songwriting while continuing the emotional honesty that has defined her career since her breakthrough with Youth Novels and the global success of “I Follow Rivers.”
For Swedish House Mafia, “Happiness Is So Sad” continues the momentum of a prolific creative period. Following recent releases including “Ray of Solar,” “Lioness” featuring Niki & The Dove, and “Finally” with Alicia Keys, the trio have entered a new chapter under their Superhuman creative collective and label. The project has become the home for both Swedish House Mafia releases and music from emerging artists championed by Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello.
Fans attending the group’s Sunday residency at Ushuaïa Ibiza have already become familiar with “Happiness Is So Sad,” where the song has emerged as one of the emotional highlights of the summer sets. Steve Angello also introduced the record during Sebastian Ingrosso’s appearance at Tomorrowland 2026, generating anticipation ahead of its official release.
The single arrives just weeks before Swedish House Mafia return home for two landmark performances at Gothenburg’s Ullevi Stadium on August 28 and 29. The concerts will be the largest headline shows of the trio’s career, underscoring their continued status as one of electronic music’s defining live acts nearly two decades after forming.
Following Gothenburg, Swedish House Mafia will head stateside for appearances at Portola Festival in San Francisco and California’s Head Trip Festival before continuing their next creative chapter through Superhuman.

Meanwhile, Lykke Li’s touring schedule includes performances at Way Out West, Flow Festival, Rock en Seine, Superbloom, Austin City Limits, and a special Mexico City performance alongside Robyn.
With “Happiness Is So Sad,” Swedish House Mafia once again demonstrate their willingness to evolve beyond festival-ready dance music. Anchored by Lykke Li’s unmistakable vocal performance and cinematic production, the collaboration blends electronic music with introspective pop songwriting, resulting in one of the trio’s most emotionally affecting releases in recent memory.
