Tinariwen are rerouting their North American plans.
The band has announced a 2026 Canada tour after canceling their scheduled U.S. dates due to travel restrictions affecting Malian nationals. Instead of pulling back entirely, they’re extending their time in Canada, with shows across Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and more.
The Tinariwen Canada run begins September 3 in Victoria and wraps September 18 in St. Catharines.
It’s a shift that lands in the middle of an active album cycle. The group is currently touring behind Hoggar, their tenth studio record, which leans back into the core of their sound, acoustic guitars, communal vocals, and slow, hypnotic rhythm, without losing the weight of what they’re writing about.
That tension is what carries the record. Hoggar is grounded in lived experience, pulling from displacement, political instability, and the ongoing realities facing Tuareg communities across northern Mali.
There are subtle changes in how the band approaches that. On this record, core members Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni share vocals for the first time in decades, breaking from the tradition of keeping songs tied to individual writers. The result feels more collective, less segmented.
The way the album was made reflects that too. Unable to record in their usual desert settings, the band regrouped in southern Algeria, working alongside a younger generation of Tuareg musicians. It’s less about reinvention and more about continuity, keeping the sound intact while letting it evolve.
That context makes the tour shift feel like an extension of what the band has always been navigating: movement, borders, and the realities around them have always shaped how and where they play.

Before heading to Canada, Tinariwen continue a run of European and U.K. dates through the spring, keeping a near-constant touring pace.
More than four decades in, they’re not operating on nostalgia. Hoggar feels present, and the tour, even rerouted, keeps that momentum moving.
